Steelers to watch playoffs on TV

first_imgWhere did we go wrong? That will be the question the Steelers will ask themselves for the next few months. Then they must correct the problems if they are to challenge for that seventh Super Bowl trophy next season. The Steelers held on once again in the fourth quarter to defeat the Miami Dolphins 30-24 to finish the season 9-7, and then they prayed for other teams to lose to get them into the playoffs. Well, not enough teams lost so they will be watching the playoffs and the Super Bowl on television. Despite the disappointing season, most teams in the league would love to have the Steelers’ problems, because they can easily be fixed.Number 1:  First priority must be a big, defensive back. They must get a tall coverage cornerback to compliment Ike Taylor. William Gay is not the answer, nor is Deshea Townsend.Number  2: They must totally overhaul the special teams. The only pluses are the kickers along with Stefan Logan, who set a Steeler record in punt and kickoff return yardage. But the coverage was terrible, worst in the league. You can’t run down speedy returners if you don’t have speed. What about using Mike Wallace on the coverage team?Number 3: The defensive line. Will Aaron Smith be back healthy? And will they re-sign Casey Hampton? Most feel Hampton, because of his age, and the offers he will get from other teams, will not be back. So that leaves Chris Hoke who has been solid as a backup but can he do it game in and game out? And what if he gets hurt? The line is the anchor of the defense. When it falters all other weaknesses are exposed, such as slow cornerbacks.Number 4: More creativity in the offense. Much of the blame is being put on the defense, but a lot of the blame falls on the offense. They were great in the first half, but completely died in the second half, especially the fourth quarter. They are loaded with talent, thus breaking just about every Steelers record in sight. Ben Roethlisberger led the way by becoming the first quarterback in Steelers history to pass for over 4,000 yards, finishing the season with 4,328. As a result of these huge numbers his receivers had their best season. Hines Ward with 1,167 and Santonio Holmes with 1,248, marking the first time in Steeler history two receivers have had 1,000 yards or more. Heath Miller set a record for receptions by a tight end with 76. Rashard Mendenhall gained 1,108 yards despite not starting until the fourth game of the season, and even then not getting the ball as often as he should because of the passing game. With all this talent why weren’t the Steelers more productive in the second half? This will be a question coach Mike Tomlin will put to his offensive coordinator and if an answer is not found, we may see a move made there. The Steelers did some things this season they haven’t in the past, which should make them more productive. They passed to the tight end at a record pace, and with Miller returning next season look for that spot to be even more productive. Joining what will probably be a three-wide receiver set, Mike Wallace, with a year under his belt, should be one of the most explosive receivers in the game next season. With Ward, Holmes and Miller on the field, teams can’t double team him, and like Randy Moss, no one can cover him one-on-one.Another new addition to the offense this season was passing the ball to the running backs, partly because Mendenhall is the best receiving back the Steelers have had since Preston Pearson, way back in the ’70s. This versatility should lead to far more scoring opportunities next season, making it much tougher for defenses to figure out what the Steelers are going to do.Another question mark is the future of Willie Parker. He still has several good years left, but not with the Steelers. In the past when the primary game was the run, we needed two solid backs, but now he would be limited to less than 10 carries per game which he’s not going to accept. There will be several teams offering him a nice buck for his services; in turn he will carry the ball more. However, the Steelers do need a second back in case Mendenhall gets hurt, plus most teams today have two backs. Mewelde Moore has looked good as a third down back so he could be used more. But if Mendenhall gets hurt, the Steelers will be hurting. So, don’t be surprised if the Steelers are once again in the Super Bowl hunt next season, with just a few minor changes. This is where Mike Tomlin will prove if he’s a great coach or not.2010 schedule(AP)—The Steelers will play division champions New England, New Orleans and Cincinnati in 2010, based on the NFL’s scheduling formula. The Steelers play home and away against AFC North rivals Cincinnati (11-5), Baltimore (9-7) and Cleveland (5-11). They will also play the four AFC East teams: New England (10-6), New York Jets (9-7), Miami (7-9) and Buffalo (6-10).Under the NFL’s interconference rotation, they will meet New Orleans (13-3), Atlanta (9-7), Carolina (8-8) and Tampa Bay (3-13) of the NFC South. The Steelers will meet third-place teams from the other two AFC divisions, Oakland (5-11) and Tennessee (8-8). Six opponents will be holdovers, including Miami, Oakland and Tennessee. SCARY MOMENT— Dolphins quarterback Pat White goes down as he is hit by Steelers cornerback Ike Taylor (24) during the second half, Jan. 3, in Miami. White was carted off the field with a head injury following the helmet-to-helmet collision with Taylor. last_img read more

ISS astronauts snap staggering volcano eruption

The volcano on Raikoke last blew out in 1924, but it’s at it again, and the view from space is spectacular. The volcano rumbled back to life on June 22, sending a plume of ash and gas skyward. Astronauts on the International Space Station captured a wild view of the action.  Sci-Tech Volcanoes from space Post a comment NASA astronaut snaps explosive Hawaii volcano from ISS Volcano seen from space looks like the entrance to hell The top part of the plume flattens out into what’s known as the umbrella region. “That is the area where the density of the plume and the surrounding air equalize and the plume stops rising,” said NASA’s Earth Observatory. “The ring of clouds at the base of the column appears to be water vapor.”The volcano’s activity was enthusiastic, but brief. Satellites kept watch as the ash and gas interacted with local weather. raikoke-spits-ashEnlarge ImageESA’s Sentinel satellite watched the eruption from orbit. Next polls to be held under EC not Hasina Quader

first_imgObaidul QuaderRoad transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader on Wednesday said the next general elections will be held under the Election Commission (EC), not under prime minister Sheikh Hasina.“Next general elections will be held under the election commission (EC), not under Sheikh Hasina,” he told journalists after a meeting on Indo-Bangla Maitree Bridge-1 at Ramgarh upazila in Khagrachhari district, reports BSS.Criticising the remarks of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia over the next elections, Quader, also ruling Awami League (AL) general secretary, said the BNP chief is trying to blackmail the people fearing her defeat in the next polls.Earlier on Tuesday, Khaleda Zia said, “Elections cannot be held keeping this parliament and elections can also not be held under [Sheikh] Hasina.”She alleged that her arch rival, premier Hasina-led Bangladesh Awami League (AL) did not come to power with the people’s mandate.“This government is not elected with the people’s vote and as it’s not elected, elections cannot be held under this government. There is nothing called parliament today.“Hasina made an arrangement for holding polls keeping parliament in place, in order to stay in power. None of them got votes in the 2014 elections. They are not eligible to be members of parliament, so parliament must be dissolved,” she added. She further said though the government is dreaming of building the Padma Bridge, it can’t be constructed during the tenure of the current government.“The Padma Bridge won’t be constructed during the Awami League’s rule. Even, if they somehow construct the bridge, please don’t get on it as there’ll be huge risk,” she added.Replying to a query of newsmen, the minister Quader said seeing the progress of the Padma Bridge construction, Begum Zia started expressing her resentment on this.Read More:BNP to join polls, but not under Hasina: Khaledalast_img read more

NTPC to bring down coal import bill to nil in 5 years

first_imgState-run NTPC is looking at bringing its coal import bill to ‘zero’ in the next five years and will rely on the fossil fuel made available by Coal India and the company’s own mines. The power major is one of the country’s largest consumers of coal. “Our aim is to have zero import of coal, and manage with the coal from Coal India sources or our own mines,” NTPC CMD Arup Roy Choudhury told PTI in an interview. When asked about the timeframe in which the PSU plans to have nil coal imports, Choudhury said, “You can say in the next five years.” NTPC ventured into coal mining as part of its backward integration process for fuel security. The company has been allotted 10 coal blocks including Chatti-Bariatu, Chatti-Bariatu (South) and Kerandari in Jharkhand, Dulanga in Odisha and Talaipalli in Chhattisgarh. Its another block — Pakri-Barwadih — in Jharkhand is likely to commence coal production by the end of this calender year and the remaining mines subsequently. “Pakri-Barwadih will come this year (2015) and others later,” Choudhury said. NTPC imported close to 16 million tonnes (MT) of coal in the just-concluded fiscal compared to 10 MT in 2013-14. Meanwhile, the PSU, which is also the country’s largest power producer, is establishing 4,000 MW imported coal-based thermal power plant at Visakhapatnam district in Andhra Pradesh at an investment of about Rs 20,000 crore. NTPC’s present installed capacity is 44,398 MW comprising 39 generating stations.last_img read more

GitHub October 21st outage RCA How prioritizing data integrity launched a series

first_imgYesterday, GitHub posted the root-cause analysis of its outage that took place on 21st October. The outage started at 23:00 UTC on 21st October and left the site broken until 23:00 UTC, 22nd October. Although the backend git services were up and running during the outage, multiple internal systems were affected. Users were unable to log in, submit Gists or bug reports, outdated files were being served, branches went missing, and so forth. Moreover, GitHub couldn’t serve webhook events or build and publish GitHub Pages sites. “At 22:52 UTC on October 21, routine maintenance work to replace failing 100G optical equipment resulted in the loss of connectivity between our US East Coast network hub and our primary US East Coast data center. Connectivity between these locations was restored in 43 seconds, but this brief outage triggered a chain of events that led to 24 hours and 11 minutes of service degradation” mentioned the GitHub team. GitHub uses MySQL to store GitHub metadata. It operates multiple MySQL clusters of different sizes. Each cluster consists of up to dozens of read replicas that help GitHub store non-Git metadata. These clusters are how GitHub’s applications are able to provide pull requests and issues, manage authentication, coordinate background processing, and serve additional functionality beyond raw Git object storage. For improved performance, GitHub applications direct writes to the relevant primary for each cluster, but delegate read requests to a subset of replica servers. Orchestrator is used to managing the GitHub’s MySQL cluster topologies. It also handles automated failover. Orchestrator considers a number of factors during this process and is built on top of Raft for consensus. In some cases, Orchestrator implements topologies that the applications are unable to support, which is why it is very crucial to align Orchestrator configuration with application-level expectations. Here’s a timeline of the events that took place on 21st October leading to the Outage 22:52 UTC, 21st Oct Orchestrator began a process of leadership deselection as per the Raft consensus. After the Orchestrator managed to organize the US West Coast database cluster topologies and the connectivity got restored, write traffic started directing to the new primaries in the West Coast site. The database servers in the US East Coast data center contained writes that had not been replicated to the US West Coast facility. Due to this, the database clusters in both the data centers included writes that were not present in the other data center. This is why the GitHub team was unable to failover (a procedure via which a system automatically transfers control to a duplicate system on detecting failures) the primaries back over to the US East Coast data center safely. 22:54 UTC, 21st Oct GitHub’s internal monitoring systems began to generate alerts indicating that the systems are undergoing numerous faults. By 23:02 UTC, GitHub engineers found out that the topologies for numerous database clusters were in an unexpected state. Later, Orchestrator API displayed a database replication topology including the servers only from the US West Coast data center. 23:07 UTC, 21st Oct The responding team then manually locked the deployment tooling to prevent any additional changes from being introduced. At 23:09 UTC, the site was placed into yellow status. At 23:11 UTC, the incident coordinator changed the site status to red. 23:13 UTC, 21st Oct As the issue had affected multiple clusters, additional engineers from GitHub’s database engineering team started investigating the current state. This was to determine the actions that should be taken to manually configure a US East Coast database as the primary for each cluster and rebuild the replication topology. This was quite tough as the West Coast database cluster had ingested writes from GitHub’s application tier for nearly 40 minutes. To preserve this data, engineers decided that 30+ minutes of data written to the US West Coast data center. This prevented them from considering options other than failing-forward in order to keep the user data safe. So, they further extended the outage to ensure the consistency of the user’s data. 23:19 UTC, 21st Oct After querying the state of the database clusters, GitHub stopped running jobs that write metadata about things such as pushes. This lead to partially degraded site usability as the webhook delivery and GitHub Pages builds had been paused. “Our strategy was to prioritize data integrity over site usability and time to recovery” as per the GitHub team. 00:05 UTC, 22nd Oct Engineers started resolving data inconsistencies and implementing failover procedures for MySQL.Recovery plan included failing forward, synchronization, fall back, then churning through backlogs before returning to green. The time needed to restore multiple terabytes of backup data caused the process to take hours. The process to decompress, checksum, prepare, and load large backup files onto newly provisioned MySQL servers took a lot of time. 00:41 UTC, 22nd Oct A backup process started for all affected MySQL clusters. Multiple teams of engineers started to investigate ways to speed up the transfer and recovery time. 06:51 UTC, 22nd Oct Several clusters completed restoration from backups in the US East Coast data center and started replicating new data from the West Coast. This resulted in slow site load times for pages executing a write operation over a cross-country link. The GitHub team identified the ways to restore directly from the West Coast in order to overcome the throughput restrictions caused by downloading from off-site storage. The status page was further updated to set an expectation of two hours as the estimated recovery time. 07:46 UTC, 22nd Oct GitHub published a blog post for more information. “We apologize for the delay. We intended to send this communication out much sooner and will be ensuring we can publish updates in the future under these constraints”, said the GitHub team. 11:12 UTC, 22nd Oct All database primaries established in US East Coast again. This resulted in the site becoming far more responsive as writes were now directed to a database server located in the same physical data center as GitHub’s application tier. This improved performance substantially but there were dozens of database read replicas that delayed behind the primary. These delayed replicas made users experience inconsistent data on GitHub. 13:15 UTC, 22nd Oct GitHub.com started to experience peak traffic load and the engineers began to provide the additional MySQL read replicas in the US East Coast public cloud earlier in the incident. 16:24 UTC, 22nd Oct Once the replicas got in sync, a failover to the original topology was conducted. This addressed the immediate latency/availability concerns. The service status was kept red while GitHub began processing the backlog of data accumulated. This was done to prioritize data integrity. 16:45 UTC, 22nd Oct At this time, engineers had to balance the increased load represented by the backlog. This potentially overloaded GitHub’s ecosystem partners with notifications. There were over five million hook events along with 80 thousand Pages builds queued. “As we re-enabled processing of this data, we processed ~200,000 webhook payloads that had outlived an internal TTL and were dropped. Upon discovering this, we paused that processing and pushed a change to increase that TTL for the time being”, mentions the GitHub team. To avoid degrading the reliability of their status updates, GitHub remained in degraded status until the entire backlog of data had been processed. 23:03 UTC, 22nd Oct At this point in time, all the pending webhooks and Pages builds had been processed. The integrity and proper operation of all systems had also been confirmed. The site status got updated to green. Apart from this, GitHub has identified a number of technical initiatives and continue to work through an extensive post-incident analysis process internally. “All of us at GitHub would like to sincerely apologize for the impact this caused to each and every one of you. We’re aware of the trust you place in GitHub and take pride in building resilient systems that enable our platform to remain highly available. With this incident, we failed you, and we are deeply sorry”, said the GitHub team. For more information, check out the official GitHub Blog post. Read Next Developers rejoice! OpenJDk teams detailed message to NullPointerException and explanation in JEP draft

first_imgDevelopers frequently encounter NullPointerExceptions while developing or maintaining a Java application. They often don’t contain a message which makes it difficult for the developers to find the cause of the exception. Java Enhancement Proposal (JEP) proposes to enhance the exception text to notify what was null and which action failed. For instance: a.to_b.to_c = null; a.to_b.to_c.to_d.num = 99; The above code will print java.lang.NullPointerException and which doesn’t highlight what value is null. A message like ‘a.to_b.to_c’ is null and cannot read field ‘to_d’ will highlight where the exception is thrown. Basic algorithm to compute the message In case of an exception, the instruction that caused the exception, is known by the virtual machine. The instruction gets stored in the ‘backtrace’ datastructure of a throwable object which is held in a field private to the jvm implementation. In order to assemble a string as a.to_b.to_c, the bytecodes need to be visited in reverse execution order while starting at the bytecode that raised the exception. If a developer or tester knows which bytecode pushed the null value, then it’s easy to print the message. A simple data flow analysis is run on the bytecodes to understand as to which previous instruction pushed the null value. This data flow analysis simulates the execution stack that does not contain the values computed by the bytecodes. Instead, it contains information about which bytecode pushed the value to the stack. The analysis will run until the information for the bytecode that raised the exception becomes available. With this information, it becomes easy to assemble the message. An exception message is usually passed to the constructor of Throwable that writes it to its private field ‘detailMessage’. In case the message is computed only on access, then it can’t be passed to the Throwable constructor. Since the field is private, there is no natural way to store the message in it. To overcome this, developers can make detailMessage package-private or can use a shared secret for writing it or can write to the detailMessage field via JNI. How should the message content be displayed The message should only be printed if the NullPointerException is raised by the runtime. In case, the exception is explicitly constructed, it won’t make sense to add the message and it could be misleading as no NullPointerException was encountered. As the original message won’t get regained so the message should try resembling code as possible. This makes it easy to understand and compact. The message should contain information from the code like class names, method names, field names and variable names. Testing done by the OpenJDK team The basic implementation of testing for regressions of the messages is in use in SAP’s internal Java virtual machine since 2006. The team at OpenJDK has run all jtreg tests, many jck tests and many other tests on the current implementation. They have found no issues so far. Proposed risks to it This proposal has certain risks which include imposing overhead on retrieving the message of a NullPointerMessage. Though the risk of breaking something in the virtual machine is very low. The implementation needs to be extended in case more bytecodes are added to the Bytecode specification. Another issue that was raised is printing the field names or local names might impose a security problem. To know more about this news, check out OpenJDK’s blog post.
