Australia sees above average international passenger growth.

first_imgAlmost 38 million passengers flew in and out of Australia in 2016 as traffic growth eclipsed historical and global averages. Government statistics show that international scheduled passenger traffic for the year hit 37.6 million, up 7.9 per cent on the previous year. That compared to global air passenger growth in 2016 of 6.3 per cent. Sixty international airlines, including five dedicated freight airlines, were offering scheduled services to and from Australia in December, when passenger traffic was 6.7 per cent ahead of the same month a year ago.But the December growth failed to keep pace with a 7.8 per cent growth in seats for the month to see seat utilisation fall slightly to 82.8 per cent. How the bigger pie was carved up also saw some minor changes. The December figures also saw seven of the top 10 airlines with a smaller share of passengers carried than in the same a month a year ago.  The exceptions were China Southern and Etihad, which each grew from 3.1 per cent to 3.2 per cent, and  AirAsiaX, which moved from 3.9 percent to 4.2 per cent. The Qantas Group’s market share fell below 25 per cent, to 24.7 per cent, and the share of passenger traffic held by Australian designated carriers fell to 30.5 per cent, compared to 31.5 per cent the previous year. Also down slightly was the share held by low-cost carriers, from 17.9 to 17.5 per cent.last_img read more

Saina raring for CWG gold

first_imgSania Nehwal is focussed on her main goal right now – winning the gold medal at the Delhi Commonwealth Games (CWG). Not surprisingly, she is leaving no stone unturned to realise her dreams.Speaking to MAIL TODAY, Saina said she gave a miss to the recent China Masters and Japan Super Series championships in back- to- back weeks to concentrate on training for the CWG.”I decided to skip both the China Masters and the Japan Open in an attempt to focus on the CWG. I realised that I had a punishing schedule leading up to the World Championships. So, I decided to concentrate on training and cut down my playing schedule,” Saina said. When it was pointed out that she had never won a major title in India and whether that would be a factor weighing on her mind, she said playing at home increased the expectations of her fans.”I do not think there is any extra pressure on me while playing in India. The only factor is that the crowds have a lot of expectations from me every time I step on to the court. But then, one cannot help it. It is only fair for them to expect a good show from me,” Saina said.Saina, who is currently ranked third in the world, felt that the CWG would have a formidable field.”Make no mistake, it is going to be a tough field. There are players like Yip Yin Pui (World No. 12) and Malaysian Mee Choo Wong (World No. 15) in the fray. I will have to be at my best. There is no doubt about that,” she admitted.advertisementAs regards her ambition of becoming world No. 1, the Hyderabadi said she had not set any specific deadline for achieving that.”Right now my focus is on winning as many major titles that I can. As regards the No. 1 ranking, I am ready to wait. There is no hurry,” she said.On his part, chief national coach Pullela Gopi Chand denied that Saina would be under extra pressure while playing at home. “I do not think pressure is a factor that is going to affect her performance. She is focussed more than ever before on coming up with a sterling show at the CWG,” he said.Gopi Chand also felt that the fact that Saina has already played at the Siri Fort Sports Complex – the venue for the badminton events in the CWG – would work to her advantage.”She has played the Asian Badminton Championships at the same venue in April and that will also be an advantage. She will be familiar with the lighting and the drift inside the stadium,” he said.Gopi Chand also felt that the Indian players had to come up with the goods when it came to the men’s single competition, with world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei also in the fray.”Lee Chong Wei’s presence makes the men’s field very competitive. Our players will have to lift their game substantially in order to perform well. They have been training very hard and I see no reason why they should not win a medal,” he said.last_img read more

Gov’t Stands Firm in Its Resolve to Protect Citizens from Human Trafficking

first_img The Senate also approved the companion Bill, the Child Care and Protection (Amendment) Act, 2018, which will allow for an increase in the penalty from 10 years to 20 years for the sale or trafficking of children. He added that the country maintaining tier two, in the 2017 Trafficking in Persons Report by the US Department of State, makes a clear statement that the Government demonstrated increased efforts in addressing the issue compared to previous reporting periods. Minister of Education, Youth and Information, Senator the Hon. Ruel Reid, says the Government stands firmly in its resolve to protect persons, especially children from human trafficking. Minister of Education, Youth and Information, Senator the Hon. Ruel Reid, says the Government stands firmly in its resolve to protect persons, especially children from human trafficking.“We collectively stand together to eliminate and protect them (children) from the threat of human trafficking; to protect and provide remedies for those who have been victims; and to ensure we have legislation in place to prevent future cases,” he said.Mr. Reid was making his contribution to the debate on the Trafficking in Persons (Prevention, Suppression and Punishment) (Amendment) Act, 2018, in the Senate on Friday (Feb. 23).The Minister noted that the passage of the amended TIP Act, will send a clear message to traffickers that the Government is unwavering in its commitment to protecting the nation’s children against such ills.“We stand together to ensure that this legislation is implemented and we will let the perpetrators of these crimes know that we are unapologetically and fervently serious about our fight against trafficking in persons, especially our children,” he asserted.Senator Reid further noted that “collectively, with one voice, we should encourage (a) change in our culture,” where speaking out is not frowned upon, but encouraged.“We need more persons willing to give honest testimonies to help rid the streets of perpetuators of these vicious crimes and provide a safe environment for our women, children, as well as men who are also victims of trafficking,” he said.In his contribution to the debate, State Minister for National Security, Hon. Pearnel Charles Jr, also concurred that persons need to speak out on these matters, noting that it is important for every Jamaican to play a role in supporting and protecting victims of human trafficking.“When we see or hear things taking place, it is time for us to start speaking out… No National Task Force Against Trafficking in Persons, no Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) unit alone can solve this problem. The country must stand together in making this a priority,” he stressed.Meanwhile, Senator Charles Jr said significant strides have been made in strengthening the Government’s capacity to detect and combat trafficking in persons. These include adopting the Trafficking in Persons Prevention, Suppression and Punishment Act; establishing the Anti-trafficking in Persons Task Force; establishing the Anti-trafficking in Persons Unit in the JCF; appointing a National Trafficking in Persons Rapporteur; developing a National Action Plan to Combat Trafficking in Persons; developing manuals to support training on trafficking in persons within the justice system; and implementing public education campaigns. He added that the country maintaining tier two, in the 2017 Trafficking in Persons Report by the US Department of State, makes a clear statement that the Government demonstrated increased efforts in addressing the issue compared to previous reporting periods.Tier two refers to those countries whose Government do not fully meet the US Trafficking Victims Protection Act minimum standards, but are making significant efforts to comply. For her part, Opposition Senator Sophia Fraser Binns, said she was pleased to see that efforts are being made to combat trafficking in persons, noting that she gives her support to any legislation that not only protects children, “but sends a message to perpetrators that as a country we are serious about protecting our children”.Amendments to the TIP Act were drafted based on the multiple issues faced in prosecuting cases which may involve criminal networks and gangs which expose jurors and witnesses in these matters to a high risk of intimidation. The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) therefore recommended that trafficking offences under section four of the TIP Act, should be tried before a judge alone in the circuit court.Additionally, a section of the Bill was amended to empower a judge to order that restitution awarded may be enforced by the victim or by the prosecution on the victim’s behalf, similar to a judgment in a civil matter. The amended Act further makes provision to empower the Minister to make regulations to better carry out the restitution orders. The Senate also approved the companion Bill, the Child Care and Protection (Amendment) Act, 2018, which will allow for an increase in the penalty from 10 years to 20 years for the sale or trafficking of children. This will bring the Child Care and Protection Act in line with the penalty under the TIP Act, which was increased when the Act was amended in 2013.Both Bills were passed in the Senate without amendments.
