Garth Hudson and Taj Mahal To Join Warren Haynes, Dr. John And More For The Last Waltz Celebration In Chicago

first_imgIt is hard to believe that one of the most memorable performances ever, The Last Waltz, put on by The Band took place 40 years ago at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom. It is arguably considered the best single night concert in history, as The Band was joined by a plethora of uber-talented special guests and friends. In honor of The Last Waltz’s 40th anniversary, Warren Haynes, Dr. John (who also played the original Last Waltz), Cyril Neville, Don Was, Dave Malone, and many more will come together to perform at The Chicago Theatre on Sunday, April 9th. Original The Band member Garth Hudson and blues legend Taj Mahal will also join the lineup to pay tribute to the special performance. To top it all off, Mark Mullins will lead an all-star horn section, which will feature the original horn arrangements of Allen Toussaint.Warren Haynes had the following to say about the show, “Whenever you’re doing someone else’s music, you’re paying respect and bringing the deepest parts of your own personality to bear. And you hope for surprises. . . . These songs – so deeply ingrained in the zeitgeist of who we are in this country – hearing them now is like finding a rare jewel.” Grammy Award-winning musician/producer Don Was also chimed in about The Band’s role in music history, “People love these songs and they’ve become a part of the emotional zeitgeist of country. And unlike the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, Bob Dylan, the Beach Boys or Pink Floyd songs, there’s nobody that’s playing this stuff for folks. You can’t really go to a concert and hear anyone playing The Band’s songs.”Tickets for The Last Waltz 40 performance at The Chicago Theatre on April 9th are currently on sale and can be purchased here.[photos courtesy of Blackbird Presents]last_img read more
