Holding discussion on PF tax, says Govt

first_imgNew Delhi, Mar 2 (PTI) Under attack over a proposal to tax PF, government today told Rajya Sabha that it is in discussion with all stakeholders and will consider the issue as the Opposition parties joined hands in the House to corner it. “We are in discussion with stakeholders. There are many stakeholders. Now I cannot reveal many things. Our government is considering all options,” Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya said when the issue came up during Question Hour. “We are discussing with all stakeholders. We are in touch with the Ministry of Finance. Government will also consider these issues. Up to now I can say this,” he said without disclosing further details on the issue. The Ministers remarks came amid indications that the government is reconsidering the proposal after facing flak from political parties and trade unions including some RSS affiliates. Tapan Kumar Sen of CPI-M, however, took strong objection to the ministers claim, saying that he being a stakeholder has not been consulted at all. “At no point of time stakeholders agreed to the taxing of the Provident Fund. Please do not put the gun on stakeholders for this offence,” he said. The minister further said that the governments main focus is give social security to the workers in the unorganized sectors by bringing them under the purview of EPF. Dattatreya also chose the occasion to seek the support of various parties in the passage of a bill seeking to amend the EPF Act, which is stuck. He said the amendment seeks to bring down the total number of workers in a unit covered under the EPF Act from the present 20 to 10 so that more people are brought under the ambit of coverage. How speed rubber training prepared Dutee for Asian Games

first_imgBy Amanpreet Singh Jakarta, Aug 30 (PTI) Disadvantaged by her short height, Dutee Chand makes up for it with her quick strides, says her coach N Ramesh, who also credited a gruelling speed rubber training regimen for her two silver medals at the Asian Games here. The 5’3” sprinter from Odisha picked up second position in 100m and 200m events, her 100m silver being India’s first in 20 years. The triumph on the track healed some of the psychological wounds she suffered while fighting for identity in the hyperandrogenism case at the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS). “Her start is natural, she has got very good frequency (of steps), so we worked hard on the first 30-40 metres. This season, I asked Dutee to practice with the speed rubber to enhance speed,” Ramesh told PTI. The regimen involves wearing a band just above the knees to increase resistance while performing training drills and workouts. The drill is believed to enhance muscle power and agility which in turn helps the sprinter accelerate. “If you do it regularly, it helps you run with same intensity in the competition, Ramesh said. “It’s not easy to maintain balance when you run with rubber tied to your body.It is very technical training. First you perform drills, then easy running and then high speed,” he explained. The 22-year old from Bhubaneshwar started practicing with the rubber after the Guwahati Nationals in June this year. “Before she started using rubber, she would cover 40 metres in 4.95 seconds and after using it it came to 4.80s. In sprints like 100m, it is crucial time,” said Ramesh.advertisement The coach also stressed on the need to not overdo it. “Hamstring conditioning is very important before you use it. The warm up is very crucial. The athlete should also be intelligent enough to endure and manage the pressure. Ramesh is proud of her ward who, he said, has immense fighting spirit as she fought alone and never thought of giving up. “When India’s 100m history sheets will be looked at, it will show that before her medal, there was just one silver and two bronze in 17 editions since 1951. This medal has come after 20 years. Full credit to Dutee, she fought on the track and in her life too,” the coach said. Dutee has a national record of 11.29s and the coach is now targeting a sub-11 time in the run up to the Tokyo Games. “She is only 22, maturity will come. That’s our aim, before Tokyo, we want sub-11. With that time she will make finals, at least.” Talking about the period between 2014 and 2018 when she was banned from running, Ramesh said, it was challenging for both of them. “My role was crucial. If kids fail exams, the parents try to motivate them. Payoshni Mitra (Dutee’s lawyer) supported her and took the case to CAS. That phase was challenging. I have seen failures and success of many athletes. There is a saying that a champion either wins or learns but never loses. She is that champion,” he said. PTI AT PM PMlast_img read more

Glenn McGrath in awe of Jasprit Bumrah: Never seen anyone quite like him

first_imgLegendary Australian fast bowler Glenn McGrath has heaped praise on Jasprit Bumrah, saying the in-form India pacer is one the kind in international cricket.McGrath, who watched the Australian team struggle against Virat Kohli’s visiting team in the ongoing Boxing Day Test, added that Bumrah’s variety has made him a crucial player of the Indian attack in the ongoing four-Test series in Australia.Bumrah has been making headlines for impressively leading the Indian pace attack Down Under. The 25-year-old fast bowler, who made his Test debut only earlier this year, is leading the wicket-takers list in the ongoing series, with 19 wickets, two more than nearest-rival Nathan Lyon.Bumrah has put India in the brink of a historic Boxing Day Test win in Australia as he ran through the hosts’ fragile batting line-up with a six-for in the first innings. Tim Paine’s men eventually folded for 151 and are reeling at 258 for 8, chasing 399 at stumps on Day 4 of the ongoing Test in Melbourne.”It’s hard for the batsmen to pick him. Bumrah is strong, bowls at a good pace and gets the ball to lift awkwardly. I have never seen anybody quite like Bumrah. He has a short run-up but powers through to the crease. And he has such an unusual, quick, whippy action,” McGrath told Sportstar. He added: “He can both take the ball away and bring it in. And he has a good yorker. Bumrah has been a huge factor in the Indian attack in this series.Bumrah’s unusual action and the consistent pace has left the Australian batsman searching for answers. The nippy pacer’s ability to be spiteful both with the new ball and the old one has been a huge boost to Kohli’s visiting team.advertisementSpeaking to the media after the fourth day’s play in Melbourne, India’s bowling coach Bharat Arun said Bumrah’s unusual action has made life difficult for most opposition batsmen. He also insisted that coaches had to work hard with Bumrah as his unusual action leads to a lot of stress.Bumrah, who was touted as a white-ball specialist, made a surprise debut during India’s tour of South Africa earlier this year. Ever since the Mumbai Indians pacer has adapted to red ball wonderfully well and is now the joint-highest Indian wicket-taker along with Mohammed Shami in Tests in 2018 with 47 wickets.”We were extremely confident of Bumrah doing well even before he started playing Tests because he was unique and most batsmen who played against him said it was difficult to pick him,” Arun said.”I had the opportunity to work with Bumrah when he was at U-19 level and when I was with NCA. I felt Bumrah was able to generate a lot of pace with his action, but puts a lot of strain on his body. It was a challenge and we had discussions with the physios and trainers. We came to the conclusion that we need to work on him to become extremely strong to be able to sustain his bowling.”Also Read | Jasprit Bumrah always wants to learn and experiment: Sunil GavaskarAlso Read | Jasprit Bumrah a workhorse, he will soon be world’s best bowler: Michael ClarkeAlso Read | Bumrah talks up India domestic cricket after Kerry O’Keeffe’s controversial remarksAlso See:last_img read more
