Iranian Revolution’s 38th anniversary, 38 years of media repression

first_imgNews February 25, 2021 Find out more March 18, 2021 Find out more Help by sharing this information After Hengameh Shahidi’s pardon, RSF asks Supreme Leader to free all imprisoned journalists News Organisation Receive email alerts to go further News Media freedom was one of the key demands of the revolution that toppled the Shah and swept Ayatollah Khomeiny to power 38 years ago, in February 1979, but it is a promise that has never been kept and Iran is now one of the world’s biggest prisons for media personnel, with a total of 29 journalists and citizen-journalists detained. June 9, 2021 Find out more The Islamic Revolution has seen a succession of leaders during the past 38 years but the persecution of journalists has never stopped. Only the methods used to silence them have evolved. The revolution’s first ten years were marked by massive arrests and the execution of several journalists who supported the Shah’s regime, including Ali Asgar Amirani, Simon Farzami and Nasrollah Arman. The deaths of left-wing journalists Said Soltanpour and Rahman Hatefi-Monfared followed. After the official executions of the “dark years,” extra-judicial executions were used to eliminate journalists. Late 1998 saw a series of murders. Journalist and editor Ebtekar Ebrahim Zalzadeh’s body was found with 15 stab wounds. Potassium was used to murder Majid Charif, a journalist with the magazine Iran-e-Farda. Journalists and writers Mohammad Mokhtari and Mohamad Jafar Pouyandeh were strangled to death. No one ever found the body of Pirouz Pirouz Davani, a newspaper editor who had been abducted in 1997.Letting journalists die slowlyThe revolution has adopted a different strategy during the past 15 years, one that is less visible but no less effective in throttling freedom of information. By holding journalists for years in prison, where they are subjected to torture, mistreatment and denial of medical care, the regime lets them die slowly. The blogger Sattar Beheshti was tortured to death at the headquarters of the FTA (Iran’s cyber-police) in 2012 for daring to criticize the regime on Facebook. The photojournalist Zahra Kazemi and the young blogger Omidreza Mirsayafi also died as a result of being mistreated while in detention. Detained journalists have often put their lives at risk by going on hunger strike in protest again prison conditions or the deaths of fellow journalists in detention. They include Hoda Saber, an Iran-e-Farda writer who died in detention in 2011.Arbitrary arrestsThe run-up to the revolution’s anniversary brought no relief for journalists this year. In fact, the persecution has clearly intensified because of the presidential election due to be held in May. The past two months have been marked by another series of arbitrary arrests under procedures that deny journalists the right to due process, have no basis in Iranian law and constitute a flagrant violation of the Universal Declaration of Human rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. The blogger Baran Mehdi Khazali was arrested for the eighth time since 2009 on 5 February, after openly criticizing the regime in interviews for Voice of America and DorTV. He was one of the first to question the official reason for former President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani’s death and to suggest he might have been murdered by drowning. Now held in Tehran’s Evin prison, Khazali was given a 14-year jail sentence in 2011.Zeniab Karimian, a woman journalist who hosts a programme on Iran’s 3rd TV channel, and Saleh Deldam, a young filmmaker, were arrested at their home on 23 January by plainclothesmen and were taken to an unknown location. Since then, their families have been told nothing of their fate.Borna News social affairs editor Tahereh Riahi was arrested at her workplace on 27 December and was placed in solitary confinement in Section 209 of Evin prison. According to the information obtained by RSF, she is now in very poor physical and psychological health.Prison or floggingPrison is not the only method used to silence journalists. Under the Islamic penal code, corporal punishment can often be applied. The various penalties available to judges include flogging in addition ot stoning, torture and death. Under articles 609 and 698, criticizing government officials or publishing false news is punishable by 74 lashes. Although inhuman, degrading and primitive, this punishment has often been used during the past ten years.Five journalists were sentenced to be flogged from 2000 to 2005. And since 2009 (and the protests against President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s controversial reelection in June of that year), no fewer than 40 journalists and citizen-journalists have been sentenced to a total of 2,000 lashes. The tendency to use this cruel and humiliating punishment has increased of late. In 2016, journalist and documentary filmmaker Kaivan Karimi was sentenced to 223 lashes, the journalist Mohammad Reza Fathi was sentenced to 459 lashes and Shahrood News website editor Mostafa Sharif was sentenced to 40 lashes.Gilan Novin and Gilan Noo news website editors Mostafa Brari and Arash Shoa Shargh were sentenced at the end of last month to 114 lashes and 40 lashes respectively. In their case, the sentences have yet to be carried out. ButNajafabad News website journalist Hossein Movahedi was administered 40 lashes on 4 January – his sentence for allegedly publishing false information.Iran is ranked 169th out of 180 countries in RSF’s 2016 World Press Freedom Index. Vietnam moves forward with 350MW Ca Mau offshore wind project, largest in the country

first_img FacebookTwitterLinkedInEmailPrint分享Seetao:The wind from the sea is coming, and countries and enterprises are rushing forward. Although offshore wind power is an inevitable choice. On November 11, 2020, Energy China Gezhouba International Corporation and Vietnam Construction and Trading Corporation signed the EPC contract for the 350MW offshore wind power project in Ca Mau, Vietnam. This project is the first large-scale intertidal wind power project signed by Gezhouba Group in Southeast Asia, laying a solid foundation for further expansion of the global new energy market. The company’s party secretary and chairman Lu Zexiang video witnessed the signing.Vietnam’s Ca Mau No. 1 wind power project is located in the tidal flat area of Sanjiang Dongshe, Nangen County, Ca Mau Province, Vietnam, with a total installed capacity of 350MW, divided into four wind farms A, B, C and D. The scope of the project EPC contract mainly includes the design, equipment supply, civil construction, installation and commissioning of projects such as intertidal wind farms, collection submarine cables, control centers, substations, transmission lines, as well as the owner’s office building and operation and maintenance docks. With the continuous economic development of Southeast Asia, especially Vietnam, Thailand, and the Philippines, the demand for electricity is increasing day by day, and the demand for renewable energy such as wind, solar and biomass energy in the local power market is also gradually increasing. Currently, Vietnam’s power generation is about 54GW. According to the national energy development strategy announced by the Vietnamese government in February, it is expected to rise to 130GW in the next ten years. The 10-year energy development plan proposed by the Vietnamese government emphasizes the promotion of clean energy and plans to increase the proportion of renewable energy to 20% to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. The development of offshore wind power is one of the priority goals of the Vietnamese government to develop the marine economy. The Ca Mau No. 1 wind power project is currently the largest intertidal wind power in Vietnam, as well as the largest wind power project in Vietnam. After the completion of the project, it will add about 1.1 billion kilowatt-hours of new power generation each year, save about 450,000 tons of standard coal, reduce about 880,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions, significantly improve the current power shortage in the region and the entire southern region of Vietnam, and ease economic and social development and environmental protection The contradiction between them has made important contributions to the sustainable development of Vietnam and the world. During the construction and operation of the project, it will effectively promote the development of related industries, increase local fiscal revenue, and create a large number of local employment opportunities, train a large number of experienced skilled workers, promote local socio-economic development, and inject strong vitality into the Vietnamese economy. In the context of the current global energy transition, Gezhouba International takes new energy business as an important direction of the company’s emerging business, relying on the advantages of the new energy international investment alliance platform, and playing an active role in China Energy Construction’s synergy in “going out” and speeding up the promotion China’s new energy business “goes out” with high quality. Up to now, the international new energy contract reserve of Gezhouba Group has exceeded 3GW, which has realized important expansion from traditional regional markets to emerging markets such as Southeast Asia and Latin America.Offshore wind power projects have higher requirements for ship equipment resources and construction management capabilities. Energy China has leading offshore wind power project design capabilities, and has mature offshore wind turbine installation and submarine cable construction equipment and technologies. The signing of this intertidal wind power project is an important result of the company’s use of the expertise of China Energy Construction’s offshore wind power to promote the deep cultivation of the Southeast Asian new energy market.[Sang Xiaomei]More: Gezhouba International signs the largest offshore wind power project in Vietnam Vietnam moves forward with 350MW Ca Mau offshore wind project, largest in the countrylast_img read more

BOCES students creation inspires Valentine’s dessert at Frank’s Italian Restaurant

first_imgBOCES Culinary Arts Student Claudia Vandyke helped created a decadent, chocolate dessert for the event and this week an inspired dish will appear on Frank’s menu. Students tasted the inspired dish Wednesday, called the Mocha Sweetheart Mousse, which is one of the options on the restaurant’s Valentine’s prix fixe menu. “It’s wonderful, it’s giving back to the young people, that’s who we have, they’re our future, it sounds a little corny, but it’s real,” said Frank LoPiccolo, owner of Frank’s. TOWN OF MAINE (WBNG) — Frank’s Italian Restaurant will feature a student-inspired dessert for their special Valentine’s menu starting Wednesday. “I hope to hopefully open up my own restaurant one day,” said Vandyke. “It’s unbelievable, I never thought a day like this would come,” said Vandyke. The student-inspired dessert will be featured at Frank’s starting Wednesday through the weekend. A few weeks ago, Broome-Tioga BOCES students crafted their own culinary creations for local restaurants like Frank’s as apart of a competition, resulting in their dishes being featured on real menus. While it may be just one dessert, students say they plan to continue heating it up in the kitchen.last_img read more

EU trade chief resignation sparks successor scramble

first_imgTopics : COVID-19 breaches On Wednesday the Irish government said 60-year-old Hogan’s resignation was “the correct course of action”.Martin piled pressure on Hogan to quit after it emerged he travelled through a county in a local lockdown and flouted guidelines for a 14-day quarantine on arrival in Ireland.Hogan also attended a parliamentary golf club dinner on August 19 in breach of coronavirus restrictions on social gatherings announced just 24 hours earlier. The sporting evening was attended by around 80 people — including a cabinet minister, a supreme court judge and lawmakers from Ireland’s upper and lower houses of parliament. It is being investigated by police under legislation limiting gatherings to 50 and has prompted a series of high-level resignations, including agriculture minister Dara Calleary and deputy Senate chair Jerry Buttimer.Hogan initially declined to apologize for his attendance at the event and details of his travels across Ireland emerged fitfully.Embarrassment was compounded when it was revealed he was pulled over by an Irish police officer for using his phone while driving.”I deeply regret that my trip to Ireland … caused such concern, unease and upset,” Hogan said in his resignation statement. Rumored replacementsMartin told Ireland’s state broadcaster RTE on Thursday that he would meet his government coalition partners to discuss Hogan’s replacement. He refused to be drawn on specific names, even as rumors swirled linking past prime ministers, current cabinet ministers and European parliamentary officials to the job.But he added: “It’s fair to say that at this stage our shared objective will be that a person of very, very high caliber will be nominated by the Irish government.”Yet there is no guarantee Ireland will retain the trade portfolio, which is regarded as a key asset protecting the Republic’s interests during Brexit trade talks with Britain.Among those touted in the Irish media as potential successors are former prime minister Leo Varadkar, Foreign Minister Simon Coveney and Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe. But all three hold key positions in Martin’s two-months-old coalition government, and Donohoe was recently appointed head of the eurozone group of finance ministers.Martin is also considered unlikely to want to weaken his administration, which has already been hit by a series of resignations and is facing a surge in coronavirus cases.RTE raised European Parliament vice-president Mairead McGuinness and former deputy prime minister turned MEP Frances Fitzgerald as possible replacements for Hogan. They were seen as figures who would not destabilize the coalition by prompting an unwelcome by-election.Other names said to be in the frame include the former EU ambassador to the United States, David O’Sullivan, and former prime minister Enda Kenny. The Irish Times, citing party sources, speculated candidates will come from the center-right Fine Gael party Hogan served as an Irish lawmaker under the terms of the coalition deal.It is thought the government may have already had a plan to replace Hogan — a former Irish government minister and EU agriculture commissioner — after he made a failed run for the head of the World Trade Organization in June. Ireland on Thursday scrambled to assemble potential candidates to succeed EU trade commissioner Phil Hogan after his resignation for breaching coronavirus guidelines.Hogan, one of the bloc’s most senior officials and a powerful force in Brexit talks, quit on Wednesday after a week-long stream of revelations caused rising public anger.European Commission executive vice-president Valdis Dombrovskis of Latvia has stepped up to take over temporarily. Commission president Ursula von der Leyen, who spoke to Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin by phone, asked Dublin to submit one man and one woman as candidates to succeed Hogan. Her spokesman said she wanted a replacement “rapidly”.Von der Leyen meanwhile issued a stern warning to other commissioners to comply with COVID-19 rules. As “Europeans make sacrifices and accept painful restrictions, I expect the members… to be particularly vigilant about compliance with applicable national or regional rules or recommendations”, she said in a statement.last_img read more

Tradition gets swift kick at a Kentucky Derby like no other

first_img Associated Press Television News SUBSCRIBE TO US COMMENT Change is slow in coming to the Kentucky Derby. From being run on the first Saturday in May to the playing of “My Old Kentucky Home” since 1921, tradition rules America’s most famous race.Custom is getting a swift kick in 2020.The coronavirus pandemic forced the 146th Derby to be pushed back to Labor Day weekend, the first time since 1945 that it won’t be held on its usual May date. The 17-horse field will break from a new starting gate on Saturday, one to be used only for the Derby. It fits 20 horses, the typical size of the field, which is slightly smaller this year.Derby horses have previously been loaded into two gates — a main gate for the first 14 runners and an auxiliary gate for the rest. Churchill Downs began using starting gates in 1930; the first electronically operated 14-stall gate was introduced in 1941. The track has used the auxiliary gate for the past 22 years.“In the horse world, anything new no one wants to try,” said starter Scott Jordan, who presses the button that springs the gate simultaneously in the Derby. “They don’t like change.”Most American racetracks use 14-horse gates because there’s rarely more than that in a given race. Overseas, it’s common to have fields of 20 or more. The new Derby gate, designed by an Australian company, was modified slightly to make room for an assistant starter in the gate with a horse after loading. Their job is to keep the horse under control and hold its head straight when the gate springs open. Overseas, it’s common for a jockey to be alone in the gate and responsible for getting his horse off to a solid start.“The starter is so important,” said trainer Bob Baffert, a five-time Derby winner. The partitions between the horses are narrower in the new gate, which puts the horses standing closer together.“When they leave there if you break a step slow, there’ll be a lot of bouncing out of there,” Baffert said.Tiz the Law, the early 3-5 Derby favorite, and 5-1 second choice Honor A. P. have stood in the new gate this week to familiarize themselves with it. Other Derby runners will visit the gate before Saturday.Perhaps the biggest change with the new gate is that horses in the No. 1 and No. 20 posts would move in about 10-15 feet on each end, Jordan said. It’s the result of the length of the gate being shorter than the two other gates combined and also takes into account the wide gap that existed between the two old gates. It would have helped Lookin At Lucky, the Derby favorite in 2010. He got pinned to the rail coming out of the gate and had nowhere to go until making a late run and finishing sixth. The Derby field was reduced to 17 after King Guillermo was scratched Thursday because of a fever. As a result, posts No. 1, 2 and 20 will be vacant. However, the horses still keep their same post position numbers.Finnick the Fierce drew the No. 1 post, but will move in two spots. The chestnut gelding is missing his right eye, the result of a congenital cataract, so he won’t see the rest of the field on his right.Authentic drew the No. 20 post, but he’ll move in one spot, giving him less ground to make up as the field sprints away from the gate.“For those two horses, it’s a real advantage,” Jordan said.Jordan has one advantage this year. Without the noise from 150,000 raucous fans, he’ll be able to hear his gate crew yelling if a horse isn’t ready. Any other year, he’d have to watch for their frantic hand signals.Image credits: AP Written By Last Updated: 4th September, 2020 08:37 IST Tradition Gets Swift Kick At A Kentucky Derby Like No Other Change is slow in coming to the Kentucky Derby. Water quality testing lab commissioned

first_imgAn $83 million facility was officially opened by Agriculture Minister, Noel Holder at the Hydrometeorological Service office on Brickdam.According to the Department of Public Information, the laboratory will monitor, examine and compile data on the use of the country’s surface and groundwater resources. The Water Quality Testing Laboratory building (DPI photo)The Water and Sewerage Act of 2002 states that the Hydrometeorological Department is responsible for managing the country’s water resources. In his address, the Agriculture Minister noted that the event marks an important milestone for the Hydrometeorological Department in fulfilling its mandate.“This marks the beginning of the thrust towards establishing a national water quality monitoring network and the establishment of a central repository for all information on the quality of the country’s resources,” the Minister remarked.According to DPI, Holder also noted that the commissioning of the water quality lab falls under the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6 as it acknowledges the importance of water quality. While the Hydromet Service will be the primary user of the facility for regulatory sampling and analysis of water, the lab is open to all to test water quality, DPI reported.Chief Hydrometeorological Officer, Dr Garvin Cummings reflected on the period when testing was done in what he described as a small and very unattractive room. He further noted that while a lot of time and energy was put into the testing process, the results could not have withstood scrutiny or be used in any solid analysis. This, he said, was the catalyst for the establishment of the new facility. The lab also has a separate room for chemical analysis, biological analysis and the weighing of samples.last_img read more

2010 World Cup field complete

first_img19 November 2009The final field of 32 teams for the 2010 Fifa World Cup™ in South Africa was decided on Wednesday evening when five playoff ties were decided – one in Africa, three in Europe and one in South America. The Final Draw to decide who plays who in the World Cup group matches takes place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre on 4 December, exactly six months before the tournament kicks off.The television broadcast of the Final Draw is expected to reach more than 700-million football fans around the globe.Algeria vs EgyptWednesday’s African playoff became necessary after Egypt and Algeria finished level on points in African Group C, after the Pharaohs beat Algeria 2-0 in the final group game. The playoff took place at a neutral venue, the Al-Merreikh Stadium in Omdurman, Sudan, with plenty of emotion to back up the high stakes after the previous encounter in Cairo, which had been marred by violence. Four Algerian players had been injured after stone-throwing Egyptian supporters attacked their bus. Egypt’s Interior Ministry reported that 32 people – 20 Algerians and 12 Egyptians – had been injured. In Omdurman, Antar Yahia decided the playoff tie with a 40th minute goal, when he blasted a deep cross by Karim Ziani into the back of the Egyptian net from close range. The victory secured a third World Cup finals berth for Algeria. Previously, the Fennecs qualified for the 1982 and 1986 finals.France vs IrelandIt took a controversial goal in extra time to settle the tie between France and Ireland and earn the French a place in South Africa next year.Down by a goal after the first leg, Ireland levelled the aggregate score after 33 minutes when Robbie Keane netted at the Stade de France after being set up by Damien Duff.In the 73rd minute, the Tottenham striker had a golden opportunity to put his side ahead when he was put clean through, with only goalkeeper Hugo Lloris to beat. But, instead of shooting, he tried to take the ball around Lloris and ended up taking the ball out of play.French desperation was clear when Nicholas Anelka tried to win a penalty with a dive. It didn’t come off, but Thierry Henry, in extra time, succeeded in fooling the referee to give France the valuable win.Thirteen minutes into the extra period, Florent Malouda found Henry from a free kick. The striker twice used his hand to control the ball – he admitted as much after the contest – before passing to William Gallas, who headed home.Ukraine vs GreeceGreece kept Ukraine out of the finals, despite playing away from home. After playing to a goalless draw in Athens, the Greeks claimed a 1-0 win in Donetsk, thanks to a 31st minute goal by Dimitris Salpigidis. The 2004 European champions, under coach Otto Rehhagel, will be contesting the finals for only the second time. Their first qualification was in the 1994 tournament in the USA when they lost all three of their pool games.Rehhagel took charge of Greece in 2001 and it has been a very successful relationship. Not only has he twice led them to the European Championships finals, including the title, but now they’re going to the World Cup again.Slovenia vs RussiaRussia had looked well on their way to South Africa when they took a 2-0 lead over Slovenia in the first leg of their playoff in Moscow. The Slovenians, however, netted a late away goal to ensure a tight battle in the second leg and that late goal came back to haunt Guus Hiddink’s charges. On Wednesday evening, at Stadion Ljudski Vrt in Maribor, Slovenia ended the Russian dream when Zlatko Dedic struck for the home side in the 44th minute. His strike levelled the aggregate score at 2-2, but the Slovenians advanced to the finals on away goals, thanks to Nejc Pecnik’s strike in Moscow.Bosnia-Herzegovina vs PortugalCrowds at the World Cup will get to see 2008 Fifa World Player of the Year Cristiano Ronaldo in action after Portugal qualified at the expense of Bosnia-Herzegovina.Leading 1-0 after their home game, the Portuguese won 1-0 again.Midfielder Nani scored the all-important away goal, effectively meaning Bosnia-Herzogovina would need to net three unanswered goals to take victory. They couldn’t find one as Portugal advanced 2-0 on aggregate.Uruguay vs Costa RicaUruguay secured the final place in South Africa. They entered their second leg match at home, in Montevideo, with a valuable away goal to their credit, after beating Costa Rica in San Jose in the first leg and, when substitute Sebastian Abreu found the back of the net 20 minutes from time, Uruguayan fans could begin to breathe more easily with a 2010 Fifa World Cup place seemingly all but sealed. However, that changed only four minutes later when Walter Centeno pulled Costa Rica level to set up a tension-filled finish. With time runnnig out, Alvaro Saborio came close to winning it for the Costa Ricans, but his shot hit the side-netting, leaving Uruguay, the two time World Cup winners (1930 and 1950), with a place in the finals for the first time since 2002.QUALIFIERSAsian Football Confederation Australia Japan Korea DPR Korea Republic Confederation of African Football Algeria Cameroon Cote d’Ivoire Ghana Nigeria South Africa (hosts) Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football Honduras Mexico United States South American Football Confederation (Conmebol)Argentina Brazil Chile Paraguay  Uruguay Oceania Football Confederation New Zealand Union of European Football Associations (Uefa) Denmark England France Germany Greece Italy Netherlands Portugal Serbia Slovakia Slovenia Spain Switzerland Would you like to use this article in your publication or on your website?
