Nagging back injury sidelines A’s Estrada, Bassitt recalled

first_imgOAKLAND — Marco Estrada went on the injured list Wednesday with a lumbar strain, and it’s at least a little disturbing the Athletics weren’t the least bit surprised.Estrada lasted 3 1/3 innings in Tuesday night’s 9-1 loss to the Houston Astros, giving up five hits (including two home runs), seven earned runs with three walks and a hit batter. It came a week after giving up nine hits and six earned runs in four innings in a 12-4 road loss to Baltimore.“It’s been bothering me, but I’ve been …last_img read more

Portugal outplay disappointing Bafana

first_imgSeemingly stunned, South Africa remained on the back foot as Portugal made all the early play, forcing one corner after another. Carlos Quieroz was fired as coach of Bafana Bafana in 2002, so he must have felt a quiet satisfaction when the team he now coaches beat South Africa 2-0 in Lausanne on Tuesday evening. Second goalIt wasn’t a surprise, therefore, when the Portuguese doubled their lead just before the hour-mark. Once more the goal came from a corner. Maybe that is what Bafana Bafana need when they play the top teams – a harder edge that can knock such sides off their free-flowing games. In the Confederations Cup, South Africa will face Spain, the European champions and runaway leaders at the top of the Fifa World Rankings. The Spanish are loaded with difference-makers from goalkeeper to striker and a less-than-fully-committed approach from Bafana Bafana could be severely punished. Early goalTheir introduction into the game hadn’t even been considered when the Portuguese took an early lead from a soft goal. South African goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune misjudged a corner kick and Bruno Alves made Bafana Bafana pay by heading home after only four minutes. Although he was generally well marshalled by the Portuguese defence, he managed a strong early shot to test the goalkeeper and another that passed just wide of the mark. Whatever South Africa’s shortcomings were, Portugal took advantage of them, and clearly showed the difference between a team ranked tenth in the world and one ranked 72nd. Chelsea midfielder Deco was again the provider for AEK Athens striker Edinho, who met the ball with his left foot at the far post to score and expose South Africa’s fragility at set-pieces for the second time in the contest; nobody had picked him up. With his team two goals down and playing second fiddle, Santana rang the changes for a different reason. He was hoping to salvage something from the game. Portugal offered nothing and ran out comfortable 2-0 winners. It was 1-0 to Portugal at the break, but they had been much the better team, dictating play throughout the opening stanza. Bafana had beaten Norway 1-0 in Rustenburg on Saturday, but that was only the side’s sixth win in 27 matches against European opposition. Afterwards, in the lead-up to the game against the Portuguese, coach Joel Santana and his players made all the right noises but, given SA’s less than stellar record against European teams, the chances of a second win in four days was remote, especially against the country ranked tenth in the Fifa World Rankings. Plenty of work neededWith the Confederations Cup fast approaching – it takes place from 14 to 28 June in South Africa – Santana still has plenty of work to do with Bafana Bafana. Not for the first time, the team seemed to freeze when confronted with a highly ranked team. With the game all but won after the second goal went in, Quieroz introduced three substitutes, including Ronaldo. 1 April 2009 In Lausanne, SA struggled to win 50/50 balls in midfield. It should be noted, however, that the side’s regular holding midfielder, Kagiso Dikgacoi, wasn’t in action, having also missed the Norway game on the weekend due to injury. SA coach Joel Santana had opted for a single striker, unlike his tactical approach against Norway when he used two strikers. That meant Red Star Belgrade marksman Bernard Parker was given the tough job of operating alone up front. Nonetheless, the defeat in Switzerland was disappointing as South Africa meekly surrendered to a Portugal team that started with star players Cristiano Ronaldo and Simao on the bench. MH370: Another piece of wreckage confirmed

first_imgAir safety investigators have confirmed that it is “highly likely” a piece of wreckage found off the coast of Tanzania, Africa, is from missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370.Australian Transport Minister Darren Chester  Minister confirmed late Friday that an analysis of the wing part, believed to be part of a flap, by theAustralian Transport Safety Bureau had established the link.  Flaps are moveable panels extended when a plane lands to increase the wing surface area.“The experts will continue to analyse this piece to assess what information can be determined from it,” Mr Chester. The latest finding brings the tally of parts from the wreckage to six. A flaperon – another type of moveable wing surface that combines the attributes of an aileron and a flap – found on Reunion Island a year ago was confirmed by French officials as coming from the plane. The ATSB  has also determined a segment of engine cowling found on a beach in South Africa and a piece of interior panel found in Mauritius are almost certainly from the plane. It made this same finding for two pieces of debris found in Mozambique and thought to be part of the horizontal stabiliser.Mr Chester said in his statement that the debris  pieces were located in areas consistent with drift modelling performed by Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation and affirmed  the focus of search efforts in the southern Indian Ocean. He said the underwater search, continuing about 2600kms west of Perth in the  120,000 sq. km priority search, was expected to be finalised by December.“We remain hopeful that the aircraft will be located in the remaining search area,” he  said. “As agreed by Ministers from Malaysia and the People’s Republic of China and Australia at the tripartite meeting on July 22, in the event that the aircraft is not located in the current area, the search for MH370 will be suspended on the completion of the 120,000 square kilometre high priority search area unless credible new evidence about the specific location of the aircraft emerges.’’A European drift study published this week also confirmed  the Indian Ocean as the  impact  zone but  suggested that the plane could be as far as 500kms north of the current search area. The study by Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change looked at five of the pieces of debris found so far and attempted to model how they had travelled and their origin. The study’s simulation defined an area which overlapped the northern half of the zone the ATSB is currently searching.”However, our simulation shows that the debris could also have originated up to around 500 km further to the north,” said centre researcher and lead author of the study, Eric Jansen.  “If nothing is found in the current search area, it may be worth extending the search in this direction.”last_img read more

Super Bowl corn syrup controversy commentary

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest By Joel PenhorwoodVery few things in life can bring people together like a well done Super Bowl Commercial. The top topic on the Monday after the game each year is more often than not, “What was your favorite commercial??” Just look at that “So God Made a Farmer” commercial from Ram in 2013. They have enjoyed a very loyal customer base because of that commercial alone.Well this year, you could say nearly the opposite happened.I’ll be the first to admit, your social media feed is probably not the best place to equally hear opinions on a topic, but nonetheless the topic was forefront on my page Sunday night.Early on in the game, Bud Light kicked off their latest installment of ‘Dilly Dilly’ commercials with a fairly funny concept. For the unfamiliar, these commercials revolve around a renaissance-era Bud Light kingdom that is very devoted to the beer. They even have the Bud Knight, clad in blue armor. The commercial has the characters in their castle’s cellar brewing the latest batch of Bud Light, when suddenly an errant barrel of corn syrup (emblazoned in foreboding, white lettering on the side of the barrel). They go on to explain in a humorous way that the delivery of the barrel must have been a mistake because Bud Light does not use corn syrup in the making of their product. The commercial goes onto exclaim, in a very forward way, that Coors Light and Miller Light do use corn syrup in the making of their beer. They even go as far as trying to deliver the barrel to the different beer kingdoms.Watch it at this link. One of the memes circulating on Facebook and Twitter, highlighting the inner thoughts of many farmers. The term “Bud Light. No Corn Syrup.” was then being used throughout the night in every quick beer promotion.Yes, the commercial was jovial and silly, while trying to hit home an important consumer topic that is often misunderstood. But, from the looks of things on Facebook and Twitter, many farmers were not laughing.Does Bud Light mean to imply they do not like corn farmers? Not likely. Are they saying corn syrup is bad? We know it’s not, but they are probably trying to take advantage of the consumer perception that it is. This is a common trick we’ve seen used and used successfully in recent years. Just go look at the amount of all-natural products out there “With no (insert scary sounding chemical name here).”Are they trying to say their competition uses a cheap product? Maybe. Were they trying to sabotage their customer base in farm country? Of course not! But hey, they did.And is corn syrup some sort of evil product? That’s a no as well. Corn syrup is simply sugar in liquid form that that has been extracted from a plant — in this case corn. Food manufacturers like it for a couple reasons.Corn farmers are dang good at making corn — we have a ton of it (and we’ll see just how much in this week’s Feb. 8 reports from USDA). As a result, corn is cheap! Farmers don’t need to be told that — markets in Chicago closed before the Super Bowl weekend hovering at just around $4 per bushel. And farmers are proud of their American product and the things it produces — like Miller Light, Coors Light, and Busch Light. Take all that and then have a company that separates their brand by calling out something safe and affordable made with the hard, honest work? Pretty solid base there, Bud.Social media is a fast moving, fickle beast and it will eat you up and spit you out in no time flat.By half time, folks on my Twitter and Facebook feed were posting statuses and memes clearly boycotting Bud Light. Some calls to go for the other beer brands were heard while others commented on the terrible branding choice from Bud Light.Another meme that capitalized on the death of the Bud Knight later in the program. The fact is American farmers are the engine behind the Super Bowl and the American way. There were 1.35 billion chicken wings eaten this weekend, according to the National Chicken Council. The “pigskin” being used in the game itself is made from cowhide (produced at the Wilson football plant in Ada). Plus, your drink of choice is made from the ground up with agricultural products. Is the ad another symptom of the growing gap between the producer and consumer? The choice to boycott or not is yours. But I implore you to use this opportunity as a time to share the good word of agriculture and its many diverse products being used in beer today.Think of it this way: three out of the four leading light beer brands prefer using corn syrup! Why isn’t Bud Light using this great product? And what better time to advocate for ag than with using something that everyone has already seen repeatedly? Use the expensive marketing campaign to your advantage. Nielsen ratings reports over 80% of American homes with televisions watch the Super Bowl — 80%! All those homes were just exposed to a major topic concerning the agricultural industry. We can take that and start a conversation with it around the water cooler on Monday, this time with an informed agricultural mind (YOU) offering their perspective.Yes, Super Bowl commercials bring agriculture together — for better or for worse. How does agriculture use this opportunity on a national stage? How will you use this yourself?Oh, and if you are boycotting Bud Light, I hear from some trusted sources the Ohio Farm Bureau has a pretty good beer celebrating their 100th year.last_img read more

In winter, heat is extracted from air, water, or the earth; this heat is used to heat the house. In summer, the process can be reversed so the heat pump pulls heat from the inside and dumps it outside. A heat pump can be used with either a forced-air or hydronic distribution system. They seem like the perfect Green technology and that’s why they’re so popular. According to the EPA, they’re extremely efficient. Problem is, it’s more complicated than it seems. They use energy from an inefficient grid that often burns coal to make power.last_img read more
