Holiday Fire Hazard

first_img* When cutting greenery from a live source, immediately dip the cut ends in wax or put them in avase of water until ready to use. Fire isn’t the only hazard of bringing fresh greenery into the house. “Mistletoe and holly with berries can be dangerous to children if they eat them,” Coder warned.”Then there are vermin hiding in the foliage.” “Treat it like fresh flowers,” Coder advised. “Commercial sprays are available that won’t make itfireproof but will make it much more fire-resistant.” To make sure your holiday greenery is safe, Coder offers these simple tips: * Look for wreaths with fire-retardant coatings. “Always keep space heaters or any heat source pointed toward the center of the room and awayfrom any greenery or a Christmas tree,” Coder said. * The key to keeping greenery safe is to replace it every week. “Test the freshness by grabbing the needles,” Coder said. “If the needles bend, they are still fresh. If they break or come off in your hand, they’re too dry and should be exchanged for freshgreenery.” To rid greenery of unwanted pests, shake it vigorously, then look through the leaves or needlesand remove any bugs or spiders you spot. “Dry, brittle greenery only needs one spark to go up in flames,” said Kim Coder, a University ofGeorgia Extension Service forestry specialist. “Greenery, especially pine, dries extremely fastand becomes extremely flammable.” “You can buy a number of wreaths during the season made from natural products that are coatedor treated, with silk flowers and decorations added,” Coder said. “Remember that they, too, canbe flammable. The plastic can melt and the core can catch fire — not nearly as easily as pineneedles, but it can happen.” Cozying up to a warm fireplace under a beautiful mantel decorated with greenery and candlescan be a holiday nightmare if it all goes up in smoke. Mistletoe and holly can lose berries if you shake too hard, so look through it carefully for bugsbefore you bring it in. Make sure to discard dry greenery away from the house or garage to prevent a further fire hazard. As the temperature dips at this time of year, remember that space heaters and dry greenery are alethal mix. The lure of the smell of fresh pine inside during the holidays sometimes can’t be deterred. But onthis holiday, take care to be safe. “Once they get warm, the critters become very active,” Coder said. “Be very fire-conscious when you bring the forest inside,” Coder said. “Forests do burn fromtime to time, and you don’t want that to happen inside your house.”last_img read more

Unless they pay immediately, the city will shut off their utilities in the very near future. The person then offers a pre-paid credit cards to pay this bill. This is a hoax, the city office said. Do not buy the cards or give them any information. Just hang up.Pam Martin, business office manager for the Sumner County Care Center in Wellington received a similar phone call.“We received a phone call this morning around 6:30 a.m.,” she said. “The gentleman with a foreign accent called and spoke to one of our nurses here at the facility and said that he was with the City of Wellington and that the March and April electric bills were not paid and that the utilities were due to be shut off at 8:30 a.m.”She said she hadn’t arrived at work yet, but when she did, she called the person back with the 800 number he had given.“I returned the call, and he could not tell me our account number or give us the exact amount that was due either,” Martin said. “But wanted us to go to Dillon’s and put $1,998.97 on a green dot card and if not then (Sumner County Care Center) could talk to the technician when he came out to turn the electricity off at 8:30.”Martin said she would be glad to meet with the technician. She said she never heard from the company again.Follow us on Twitter.last_img read more
