United States Donates 34 Jeeps For The Uruguayan Peace-Keeping Mission in Haiti

first_img The U.S. government has donated thirty-four jeeps for use in the peace-keeping missions conducted by the Uruguayan contingent in Haiti. The acquisition of these jeeps is the result of more than a year of joint planning and coordination between Uruguay and the U.S. Army, and its objective is to improve the operational capability of the Uruguayan peace-keeping forces. The vehicles will be used by Uruguayan military personnel in future United Nations peace-keeping operations and in humanitarian-aid programs. They will likewise facilitate the access of Uruguayan forces to rural or isolated areas and to urban areas during natural disasters, military operations, and routine inspections. The ceremony of donation was held at Uruguay House, the command headquarters of the contingent deployed in Haiti, and was attended by the minister of foreign affairs, Luis Almagro, and the minister of national defense, Luis Rosadilla, as well as by representatives from the U.S. embassy. Both state secretaries arrived in Haiti following their visit to the United States, where they held a series of meetings with representatives of President Obama’s administration. Accompanied by the U.S. ambassador to Uruguay, David D. Nelson, Almagro and Rosadilla were received at the White House by Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg, as well as by Dan Restrepo, a special assistant to President Barack Obama and National Security Council director for Western Hemisphere affairs. There has been little talk about that incident in this series, with both Australia and South Africa both shying away from being overly aggressive. However, it seems that the ball-tampering scandal is still lurking in the backdrop.
