Three Alleged Zetas Arrested with 336 Kilos of Cocaine in Guatemala

first_imgBy Dialogo June 02, 2011 Following an armed confrontation, Guatemalan anti-drug agents arrested three Guatemalans suspected of belonging to the Mexican Los Zetas cartel, which is believed responsible for the massacre of twenty-seven peasants on a rural property on 14 May, and seized 336 kilos of cocaine, the police announced. “Three individuals were arrested, and Mexican documents were seized from them, so that the investigation is pointing toward their possibly being members of Los Zetas or having ties with that (criminal) organization,” police spokesperson Donald González told AFP. The three suspects were detained after a pursuit when they failed to obey an order to stop at a police checkpoint on the Atlantic highway, and in their attempt to escape, they drove onto a dead-end road, where the confrontation took place, González indicated. The agents also seized 336 kilos of cocaine, three armored vehicles, two AK-47 rifles, and two M-16s, as well as ammunition. The Guatemalan authorities attribute to Los Zetas the massacre of twenty-seven peasants on a rural property in the northern department of Petén on 14 May and the murder of a public prosecutor last week. President Álvaro Colom imposed a state of emergency in Petén two days after the massacre, as a result of which sixteen suspects have been detained, seven of them Mexicans. Los Zetas, whose networks extend from the southern United States to several countries in Central America, are a group created by Mexican military personnel who deserted some years ago to join the Gulf cartel, with which they are now clashing.last_img read more

Meals on Wheels of Broome County braces elements to help community

first_imgThe program benefits over 400 seniors across the county, as volunteers brace the elements. But the Meals on Wheels Program of Broome County has taken steps to ensure that in the event of inclement weather, the senior citizens that rely on the program’s resources will be taken care of. “We are very well-prepared and are in constant contact with the recipients of the meals to make sure that they’re safe,” Schuhle said. At the end of the day, serving Broome County is a top priority for everyone involved at Meals on Wheels When snowstorms and other wintry mixes hit, the program stays in tune with county snow removal teams. “If we get a huge snowstorm, then we would go into emergency mode, and try and get meals out after that,” said Lisa Schuhle, the director of the county’s Office for Aging. “The staff sends out emergency meals. We try and make sure everyone has two days of supplies.” “We do stay connected to emergency services and everyone especially in a huge snowstorm everybody works together well to make sure everyone is taken care of,” Schuhle said. But if the weather outside gets too frightful, Schuhle says the volunteers won’t go out to deliver in order to keep everyone safe. “The volunteers show up in rain, wind, when it’s freezing cold, when we do have some snow remaining, so the volunteers are very dedicated. We are very well prepared for winter, ice or whatever it may be,” Schuhle said. “You have do a things a little slower, because its important to them so I want to make it important to me that I maintain getting to there,” Jones said. BINGHAMTON (WBNG) — When winter weather hits Broome County, schools and programs often have to shut down because of road conditions. Volunteers like Jim Jones, who has been with the Meals on Wheels program for 26 years, has seen his fair share of snow, but knows the importance of giving back to his community no matter the weather. The program is always looking for donations and volunteers to help with drop-off routes. To get involved, Schuhle asks you contact the Office for Aging.last_img read more
